Carter G. Woodson, the founder in 1926 of the first American celebration of African American history, was a teacher, principal, and supervisor of schools. He selected the second week in February as "Negro History Week" because both Frederick Douglass's and Abraham Lincoln's birthdays fall during that week. Dr. Woodson committed his life to education, and to studying the African American experience - earning his doctorate from Harvard University, the second African American to accomplish that. The Midwest City-Del City Public Schools Foundation is a community-based nonprofit organization that for 20 years has been promoting and supporting the Midwest City and Del City public schools by inspiring excellence in education.
